H.O.P.E. (Helping Oncology Patients Exercise)

Pioneer class 2010-2011
What is HOPE?
In October of 2010 the Thomasville YMCA partnered with Archbold Integrative Medicine and the Singletary Oncology Center to create HOPE (Helping Oncology Patients Exercise), a program to support cancer survivors in their return to physical activity. HOPE is a 12 week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. The goal is to help cancer survivors build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self-esteem. A final objective of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical activity program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle as a way of life. YMCA trainers give personal individualized instruction to the participants. HOPE meets twice a week at the Everett-Milton YMCA.
